Colorado Brides Ask: Music Requests at My Wedding – Should I Allow Them?
Absolutely! BUT…you may want to determine that ahead of time. Some Colorado brides want Amore DJ Entertainment to take, and even encourage, song requests throughout the night. Others do not. It’s completely up to you. That being said, when wedding guests request music, please remember, that no DJ can have every song that could be ever be requested, or actually be able to work them all in. Sometimes, guests may request songs that simply do not “fit-in” with the music programming, or even contrary to the vibe you want.
For example, if you are having a wedding at the YMCA, or the historic Stanley Hotel in Estes Park might be a completely different vibe than a wedding at Spruce Mountain Ranch in Larkspur, or the Covey in Wellington, or Block One in Fort Collins. Not only does each couple have a distinct vision, but the venue also casts a vision too to compliment the music too.
A Colorado wedding features a mix of ages, varying music tastes, personal styles, different beliefs, values and cultures. Only through actual wedding experience, can a professional wedding DJ achieve the need for variety in music tempo, styles, genres, eras and how to read a varying crowd. This can never be done playing a club, bar, school dance, mitzvah or college party. Music subtly augments a cocktail party and enhances dinner guests’ conversations. Then, if well planned, it energizes a dance floor continuously for hours.
Our job, as an experienced wedding DJ, is to appeal to as many dancers as possible by playing all styles and genres of familiar dance music.
The first key to doing this, is to specifically play tasteful and “family appropriate” songs and shy away from songs that could otherwise stun grandma with that new club song laced with adult content and questionable language. (Our policy: we only play “radio edit” songs…thus no songs with “F” this and “N” in them, etc. We like to keep our weddings classy.)
Secondly, to maximize dancing, it’s always best to play songs that appeal to the large group as a whole, first. A song that is number one on the charts now might be familiar to a few younger guests, but likely won’t be to older guests. So, there is a strategy to building a great dance party: “as the night gets later, the music tends to get newer.”
That’s what a professional and experienced wedding DJ will do. Read the crowd, take requests and energize the dance floor!
